Athanasios Tsiouris, M.D., a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, has recently joined Providence Medical Group Cardiothoracic Surgery.
“There is a lot of potential here at Providence,” Dr. Tsiouris says. “I’m very interested in providing the highest level of cardiac surgical care and technique possible to patients in Wyandotte County. We have a wide range of cardiac pathology in this community.”
Dr. Tsiouris comes to Providence following the recent completion of a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. He performed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at St. George’s Hospital, London, and general surgery residencies at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich., and the Royal Free Hospital, London. He attended medical school at the University of Thessaly, Greece, and holds membership with the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He is specifically interested in valve repair and replacement, aortic aneurysm repair and arch replacements, off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), lung surgery including thoracoscopic lobe resections, pulmonary embolectomies and diseases of the thorax. Dr. Tsiouris also is trained in treating heart failure using left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) and is interested in developing this program to serve area patients.
He has authored numerous publications and book chapters on a variety of cardiothoracic topics. He also is a reviewer for multiple peer-review scientific journals, and has multiple advanced certifications, including Advanced Trauma Operative Management.
Dr. Tsiouris and his wife reside in Overland Park with their two children. He is a former member of the Greek Olympic team and a five-time national junior champion in the 100-meter run. He also speaks fluent Greek.
